Renaissance Painting Recreation Process

Original Painting:

First I drew the woman with prisma colored pencils. As I was drawing her decided that I honestly just didn't feel like drawing the blanket she's leaning on, so instead I drew a skull. This is sort of how the creepy elements were born. Then as I was drawing and adding details to her, I also decided to give her some armpit hair. I thought it was interesting because when this painting was originally created I'm pretty sure women weren't shaving yet, so the fact that she doesn't have armpit hair in the original either means that the artist was being lazy or just wasn't thinking about it I guess. But anyways, since I added armpit hair I decided to turn it into sort of a feminist piece where I explore the ideas of femininity. And thus my piece was born.

Renaissance Painting Recreation

For this piece I wanted to make something that explores femininity. I added elements of things that people associate with femininity, but I made them look gross and creepy. I also made the scale very weird and I kept the original shadows in the pictures so it would look more gross and fake. I also gave her armpit hair because why not.

Juxtaposition Photoshop

The first piece with one appropriated image of a lion, and some pictures of myself. In this piece I am exploring some self expression and compairing myself to a lion.

This is my revised version of my first piece; because I didn't like it. Someone mentioned that the pictures of me looked very feminine, and the picture of the lion looked masculine, so I decided to play around with gender a little.

This piece is a self portrait sketch I did, with photos of me on top. I wanted to explore the difference between real life and drawings. I also wanted it to be a little unsettling to look at, so in order to enhance this I made the background a really bright pink.

Juxtaposition Photoshop (process)

I had a hard time figuring out exactly what I wanted to do, so I ended up playing around with images a lot.

For the first piece I was actually looking for a picture of a lion for something else (a project that I scrapped), and I ended up liking the image to much that I decided to make it the main focus of a piece. Then I took two different images of me (with wax and makeup on my face), and cut up my eyes and mouth in different ways. I used it as a way to compare myself to the lion in a way, sort of to explore some self expression.

I actually redid my first piece because I ended up not liking it. Instead I decided to do a piece on gender. For the photo on the left, I dressed up as a "boy," and for the picture on the right I dressed up as a "girl." I wanted it to be obvious that both pictures are me, but I am displayed in a very different way; but still me. I wanted this piece to be about how gender and sex doesn't really matter in terms of who someone is.

For the second Piece I took a drawing that I did of myself (featured in this blog), and then I put my mouth and eyes over the face. In this piece I am compairing myself as a drawing to myself in real life. I also made the background bright pink in order to create more contrast and disturbance in the eyes.

Self Portrait Process

In order to get the original photo of me how I wanted, I put on some makeup, then I took blue, purple, and white candles and melted the wax on my face. In the process of getting the wax off, I actually ripped out a few eyelashes, and burnt a little of my hair. The things we do for art am I right?

Anyways, once I got that picture, and another drawing I did of myself, I basically cut up my face in photoshop, then I put the pieces back together again.

I wanted it to look a bit creepy, while also still being visually appealing. I was originally going to smooth out the edges on the lips, but I decided that I liked the slight imperfection of it. Most of it is pictures of my face, and the blue is a picture of a wave. I thought it would be interesting to use the wave, and make wave-esk shapes with it, while simultaneously not using the shape of the original wave.
